A regional code may describe the original area of a geographic range, not the present location of a person or device.
Find the right number type
An area code is meaningful when the national plan assigns a geographic fixed-line range.
Read it as allocation
The region belongs to a numbering-plan record. A person can move, travel or use a service elsewhere.
Show the uncertainty
For mobile, VoIP or shared codes, a precise city label may be unsupported. Prefer “region not inferable” to a false pin.
An assigned region is a range fact
Use the Ofcom-listed 020 7946 0018 drama example to distinguish geography in a numbering plan from a person’s whereabouts.
| Layer | UK specimen | Evidence boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Country plan | +44 / United Kingdom | International assignment |
| Geographic area | 020 / London | Area-code allocation |
| Subscriber address | Unknown | Not supplied by the area code |
| Current position | Unknown | No device-location measurement |
A map displaying an area allocation should label that allocation explicitly. It should not place a pin that implies a tracked person.
