CARRIER / ALLOCATION

Can a phone number show its original carrier?

Prefix metadata can sometimes describe the network that first received a range.

What an original-carrier label needs
The short answer

Original allocation is different from the provider serving the number today. Label it as original when that is what the source supports.

Use the allocation layer

Numbering authorities allocate ranges; some metadata maps a number to the original carrier for that range.

Account for porting

In regions with mobile number portability, libphonenumber says its carrier mapping returns the original carrier, not necessarily the current one.

State the date and source

A defensible result names the source and metadata freshness. A bare operator badge overstates the evidence.

What an original-carrier label needs

Imagine a static record assigning a number block to Provider A. These are hypothetical provider labels; no real operator result is being shown.

Report itemNeeded evidenceHonest label
Range owner at allocation Published allocation record or maintained metadata Original allocation: Provider A
Record age Actual source/version date Allocation metadata version
Missing range entry No matching supported record Unknown
Provider after a port Separate current routing information Not established by this record

Do not fill missing allocations with a guessed brand. A source date describes the record, not proof that today’s subscriber still uses that provider.
