An area code is not a map pin
Regional numbering is administrative geography, not live location.
Where the digits came from
Geographic blocks can be assigned to an area in a numbering plan.
Where the person is
Travel, moves and service choices break any claim that those digits track the device.
How to display it
Use an “assigned area” label and an explicit limitation rather than a live-looking map marker.
Replace the misleading map label
These are hypothetical interface labels, not actual lookup results.
| Presentation | Reader’s likely conclusion |
|---|---|
| A pin titled “caller location” | Suggests a measured person or device position |
| An area labelled “numbering allocation” | Describes the geographic plan assignment |
| A separate “current location: unknown” field | Keeps the missing measurement visible |
Use geography to explain the allocation. Avoid animation that moves a pin as though a person were being tracked.
