International calling codes: how to read them

Calling codes lead you to a numbering plan; they are not a directory of people.

Shared NANP

A small reference, not a worldwide database
The short answer

Use the ITU national numbering-plan list for current assigned codes. This prototype highlights a few examples, not a complete live database.

Examples from the plan

The ITU lists +44 for the United Kingdom, +49 for Germany, +91 for India and shared +7 for Russia and Kazakhstan.

Shared codes need more digits

Under +1, area and exchange codes distinguish participating NANP regions. The country code alone does not resolve the country.

Check for updates

Allocations and national rules can change. Cite the responsible numbering authority and record the metadata date before publishing a lookup.

These selected assignments explain how to read a prefix. They do not cover every country, territory or global service.

+7 Russia / Kazakhstan Which national allocation applies?

A prefix missing from this table is unsupported here, not necessarily invalid. Neither the table nor the explorer checks whether a full number is assigned.
